  7. ScreenPaint is a ASCII screen editor with color capabilities,
  8. WordPerfect-like    line    drawing   features,   and   color
  9. manipulation  tools.  Screens  can be "painted" on screen and
  10. modified  with  a  wealth  of  tools in a full-screen editing
  11. environment,  complete  with  pull-down  menus, dialog boxes,
  12. help  screens,  and  ten  screen pages. Drawing tools include
  13. freehand  drawing,  lines, boxes, multiple line styles, color
  14. altering, and block cutting and pasting.

  16. ScreenPaint  was  developed to allow the design of lightning-
  17. fast,  batch  file  based  hard- disk menus, help facilities,
  18. pop-up   windows,  and  prototype  screens  for  applications
  19. programs. Once  a  menu  screen is painted and saved to disk,
  20. the stand-alone ScreenShow program can be used to display the
  21. image  from  a  batch  file  and  wait  for  user input, thus
  22. applications can be run with a single keystroke. Help screens
  23. can  be  displayed  over  the menu and the background will be
  24. restored  upon  closing.   Programmers  can  experiment  with
  25. application  displays  and  color combinations when designing
  26. programs.

  28. Completed screens can then be displayed from a DOS batch file
  29. and  "popped"  directly  to  the  video  display, rather than
  30. scrolled  using  the  extremely  slow  DOS  ECHO command. The
  31. program  can  wait  for  user  input  once  a  menu  has been
  32. displayed  and  return  the  key  code as an ERRORLEVEL value
  33. which can be tested from within a batch file.

  35. Unlike  other  menu  creation  systems, the user has complete
  36. control  over  the  style  of  menu  displays  since the menu
  37. screens are independent of the user input batch file.    This
  38. allows  the  user  the  flexibility to use any batch language
  39. from  DOS  to  batch extenders like Beyond.Bat, Command Plus,
  40. and   Extended   Batch   Language.  Since  the  user  is  not
  41. constrained by the menu managment program,  he/she is free to
  42. include  company logos,  special instructions for users,  and
  43. help files in the menu.  The program can also handle function
  44. key selections as well as Control and Alt key combinations.

  46. The  screen design editor has a familiar Quick-language style
  47. interface for ease of use,  but most functions have short-cut
  48. keyboard  alternatives  for  experienced  users.  The program
  49. provides  ten  screen  pages  among  which  the user can move
  50. blocks  of  text  as  well  as save all ten pages in a packed
  51. format to disk or only text in the clipboard.  Screens can be
  52. saved  or  loaded in three formats directly from the program,
  53. without  the need  for a conversion utility,  including BASIC
  54. BLOAD  compatible  format and ASCII text for integration into
  55. word processing documents.
